# AI usage

Every model response the canvas assistant receives is recorded with its token counts and, where the
model is priced, its cost in US dollars. The spend sits with the person who ran it, on their own
Anthropic key.

## What you can do

- See the tokens and cost of an assistant run in the Agent panel once the run finishes, as
  `Tokens: 1,240 in · 310 out · $0.006`.
- Choose a cheaper Claude model under Settings > You > My AI > Default model > Claude model.

## How to

1. Open a canvas and press Assistant.
2. Send a message. When the run finishes, the panel shows the run's totals below the reply.
3. To change model, open Settings > You > My AI. Under Default model, set Canvas assistant model (Claude, or
   Local (Ollama) where offered) and Claude model (Sonnet 5.5, or Haiku 5.5 (faster, cheaper)).

## What is recorded

One row per model response:

Pricing:

- Cost is worked out from the model asked for, per million tokens, at the server's price table.
  A dated model id takes the price of the model it extends.
- Haiku 5.5 has a higher rate once a prompt passes 100,000 tokens.
- Local (Ollama) runs record tokens and no cost.
- A run's total in the panel adds every response in that run. Input there includes cache reads and
  writes.

## Limits

- The ledger covers the canvas assistant only. Capture's action extraction and other model calls are
  not recorded. <!-- verify: capture plugin writes no llm_usage rows -->
- There is no usage screen or report: no history per person, per month or per workspace. The totals
  show only in the Agent panel, per run.
- Costs are estimates from the server's price table. Anthropic's bill for the key is the actual charge.
- Usage is kept when a run is cancelled or replaced.
- Prices are set by the server operator, not in Settings.
