# Gantt

A Timeline layout on a project's tasks page. Each task is a bar from its start date to its due date,
with arrows from blockers to the tasks they block, so the plan and its knock-on effects show at a
glance.

## What you can do

- See every dated task as a bar, grouped by board column or task list.
- See dependency arrows, a today line, and an Unscheduled list of tasks with no dates.
- Zoom by Day, Week or Month.
- Move a bar to change both dates, or drag an end to change one.
- Drag a task from Unscheduled onto the chart, or press Today beside it to schedule it from today.
- Open a task from its bar.
- Read the same timeline through the API.

## How to

1. Open a project's tasks page and press the Timeline layout button, beside Rows, Cards and Canvas.
2. To group, open Display options and set Group by to Board columns or Task lists.
3. To move a task, drag its bar. To change its start or due date, drag that end.
4. Keyboard: focus a bar, then the arrow keys move it a day at a time and Shift+arrow changes its due
   date. Enter opens the task.
5. API: `GET /api/v1/plugins/gantt/projects/<project id>/timeline` with a token holding `tasks:read`.
   Optional `group_by=stage` or `group_by=list`.

## Limits

- Needs the Gantt plugin switched on for the install. See [Plugins](/docs/manual/plugins/plugins.md).
- Seeing the timeline needs `view tasks` on the project. Changing dates needs `edit task` and write
access to the project; otherwise the bars do not move, and a refused change says "You cannot change
  the dates on this task."
- A task with one date shows as a one-day bar.
- Dependencies are added and removed on the task, or through the task API, not on the chart.
- Clients see no task hidden from clients, and no arrow that touches one. The timeline carries no
  money.
- No baselines or critical path.
