What we store

When you sign up we store:

The confirmation link is stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form. The site sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies. It counts visits with our own analytics; see Counting visits.

Why

To send you updates as we build siftware.dev, and early access as it opens up, because you asked. That is the legal basis: your consent. The IP address, user agent and timestamps are kept as a record of that consent and to stop abuse of the form.

Your answer to "what would you use it for" is read by us to decide what to build. It is not shared.

How long

Who else sees it

The data is held on a server we run ourselves, hosted by Hetzner in Germany. Emails go out through Resend, which sees your address and the email in order to deliver them. We do not sell or share the list.

Like any website, the servers in front of this one keep short technical logs, which can include IP addresses, to keep it running and secure. Server backups may hold a copy of the list for a short time after you unsubscribe.

Counting visits

We count visits to this site to see how it is used. We use our own analytics, on our own servers in Germany (EU). It sets no cookies and sends nothing to other companies.

For each page you view we record the page address without its query string (apart from campaign tags such as utm_source), the site you came from, your browser's language, your country, the type of device, and the browser and operating system families.

To count visitors without following them, our server makes a one-way code from your IP address, your browser's user agent and a value that changes every day and is then deleted. We cannot link your visits from one day to the next. Your country is looked up on our own server. Your IP address and user agent are used in memory to make that code, find your country, filter out bots and limit abuse, then dropped; they are not stored.

If you arrive from an ad, the ad's click reference is kept only if you have agreed to it for that ad platform, and for 90 days. Without that agreement it is dropped.

If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we do not count your visit. You can also opt out with the "Opt out of analytics" button at the foot of every page. That stores one setting, sa_optout, in your browser's local storage, so we know not to count you. It is not a cookie and holds nothing about you. The same button opts you back in, and clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.

Visit records are deleted after 90 days. Totals by day, page and source are kept for 13 months.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing how this site is used. UK law allows this counting without asking first, as long as we tell you and you can object (Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, Schedule A1, paragraph 5).

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. The unsubscribe link in every email deletes it straight away. To stop us counting your visits, use the opt-out button at the foot of any page. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
